Olfactory Design Elements: Seasons, Time, and Space

Time, for most people, may be just a phenomenon made up of calendar pages. However, upon closer inspection, it will be noticed that time actually progresses with scents.

Spring is not just about flowers blooming. A fresh, almost translucent scent accompanies one in the air. Summer evokes an intense memory carried by stones warmed under the sun and a light salty breeze. Autumn whispers the introverted sound of the earth. Winter, on the other hand, is the pure scent of cleanliness, simplicity, and silence.

Looking at all these seasonal cycles, a space remains vibrant when it changes with the season. Spaces that do not change remain outside of time. And everything that remains outside of time eventually becomes insensitive.

Referring to contemporary modern interior architecture; interior design is now intensely nourished not by a static orientation, but by a fluid and critical discipline. For this reason, spaces, just like people, must always breathe. At this point, scent becomes the most powerful tool that brings the rhythm of time inside and adds rhythm to spaces.

Shaping Time with Scent and Future Design

When looking at the design components of scent, the harmony of seasons, time, and space comes to the fore. While green, floral, slightly damp notes are preferred in spring, citrus, salt, and sun-drenched fruits come to the forefront in summer. In autumn, woody, spicy, deep scents emerge, while in winter; powdery, clean, and calming tones and notes prevail. As expected, these transitions not only change the atmosphere but also lead to the transformation and change of one's mood.

Lighting a candle, choosing a room fragrance, pouring cologne to freshen up... These seem like small decisions and simple actions in the daily flow. But in reality, what is being done is nothing but shaping time. Perhaps the most elegant design is the ability of humans to intervene in the flow of time. A scent paired with an environment actually determines how that space will be remembered in the future. Therefore, with a scent, you design not only environments but also a moment to be remembered in the future.
